About
Prof. Emeritus Datin Dr Lucy Lum Chai See is a deeply respected Paediatric Intensivist whose trail-blazing contributions have shaped paediatric critical care in Malaysia. Since joining the Department of Paediatrics at University of Malaya in 1990, she has driven the growth of paediatric acute and critical care services, achieving this even when resources were limited. Her fellowship training in paediatric intensive care at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto equipped her with expertise in mechanical ventilation and advanced critical care techniques. She became the first Malaysian to pass the European Diploma in Paediatric Intensive Care.
Prof. Lum played a key role in building and expanding Malaysia’s paediatric intensive care infrastructure. She helped pioneer PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support) training across many states, led efforts to define the clinical response to major outbreaks (e.g. EV71), and was central to establishing and improving UMMC’s Paediatric ICU. Her collaborations with the WHO and other countries have extended her impact regionally and internationally, particularly in dengue clinical management and training. She remains actively involved in bedside clinical care, mentoring, and improving outcomes for critically ill children.
Her long clinical service, advanced overseas fellowship training, leadership in outbreak response, and dedication to training and guideline development make her a trusted and compassionate authority in paediatric critical care.
