Surgical Oncology (Tumour Resection) in Malaysia
Surgical oncology involves the surgical removal of tumours and surrounding tissue to treat or stage cancer, often as part of a multimodal treatment plan including chemotherapy and radiation.
Overview
Surgical resection remains the cornerstone of curative treatment for most solid tumours. Surgical oncology encompasses a wide range of procedures from wide local excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy to major organ resections (hepatectomy, pneumonectomy, oesophagectomy, Whipple procedure). Minimally invasive approaches (laparoscopic, robotic) are increasingly used, reducing hospital stay and recovery. Oncoplastic techniques preserve form and function. Surgery may be performed with curative, debulking, or palliative intent. Malaysia's surgical oncologists manage the full spectrum of common cancers.
