Epilepsy Treatment in Malaysia
Overview
Epilepsy affects approximately 1% of the population and is characterised by recurrent unprovoked seizures. Most patients achieve seizure control with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs). Approximately 30% have drug-resistant epilepsy, requiring evaluation for surgical treatment. Comprehensive epilepsy centres offer prolonged video-EEG monitoring (to capture seizures and localise their origin), advanced neuroimaging (MRI epilepsy protocol, PET, SPECT), neuropsychological testing, and surgical options including resection, corpus callosotomy, deep brain stimulation (DBS), and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). Responsive neurostimulation (RNS) is available at select centres.
