About Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy (radiation therapy) uses high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells in a targeted area of the body. It may be used on its own or with surgery or chemotherapy: to cure cancer, to lower the chance of it coming back, or to relieve symptoms such as pain. Most radiotherapy is external beam treatment from a machine called a linear accelerator. Modern techniques such as IMRT, VMAT, image-guided radiotherapy and stereotactic radiotherapy shape the dose to the tumour to spare nearby healthy tissue. Brachytherapy places a radiation source inside or next to the tumour.
