Gleneagles Hospital Penang
About
Gleneagles Hospital Penang (GPG) is one of Malaysia's most established private hospitals, founded in 1973 as a three-storey facility with 70 beds at the junction of Jalan Cantonment and Jalan Bell in George Town, Penang. It was among the first private hospitals in the region and has grown continuously over five decades into a major tertiary care centre.
The hospital was expanded to six floors in 1977 (132 beds), acquired by Singapore-listed Parkway Pantai in 1989 (then renamed Gleneagles Medical Centre), and significantly expanded again in 2013 with the completion of a 19-storey annex. Today the hospital comprises its original six-storey block and the modern annex, together accommodating 360 beds. Gleneagles Hospital Penang is one of 16 hospitals operated by Pantai Holdings Sdn Bhd (Pantai Group), a subsidiary of IHH Healthcare Berhad — one of the world's largest private healthcare groups.
The hospital is supported by over 85 specialist doctors spanning a broad range of disciplines including Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology, Medical and Surgical Oncology, Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Internal Medicine. A team of more than 1,100 nurses, allied health personnel, and support staff ensures comprehensive patient care.
Gleneagles Hospital Penang received JCI accreditation with the Gold Seal of Approval in 2016 and was re-accredited for the 2019–2022 term. It is also accredited by the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) and is a founding member of the Penang Centre of Medical Tourism (PMED). The hospital is a popular destination for regional medical tourism, drawing patients particularly from Indonesia, Myanmar, and the Middle East. International patient services include visa and flight assistance, multi-lingual staff (English, Mandarin, Malay), interpreter services, airport transfers, and specialist appointment coordination.
The hospital is situated in central George Town, approximately 20–25 minutes from Penang International Airport, and is accessible from the Malaysian mainland via Penang Bridge and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge.
