Mitral Valve Repair in Malaysia
Overview
Mitral valve repair is heart surgery to fix a leaking or, less often, narrowed mitral valve, the valve between the two chambers on the left side of the heart. Repairing the patient's own valve is preferred over replacing it where possible: it preserves heart function and avoids the lifelong blood thinners needed with a mechanical valve. Repair can involve reshaping the valve leaflets, replacing torn supporting cords and placing a ring around the valve (annuloplasty). It is done by open-heart surgery or by minimally invasive surgery through a small incision between the ribs. For some patients who cannot have surgery, a catheter-based procedure (transcatheter edge-to-edge repair) may be an option.
