Overview
Thyroidectomy is surgery to remove all (total thyroidectomy) or part (hemithyroidectomy) of the thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck that controls metabolism. It is used to treat thyroid cancer or suspicious nodules, a goitre (enlarged thyroid) that presses on the windpipe or food pipe, and an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) that does not respond to other treatment. After a total thyroidectomy you will need to take thyroid hormone tablets for life; after a partial thyroidectomy, the remaining gland is often enough.
